    Book details

Drawing on previously classified records, recordings, and transcripts, John Farmer, the Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission, has written the definitive account of 9/11 that enlarges-and revises-our understanding of what happened before, during, and beyond the attack, revealing a government that has systemically institutionalized failure and rewarded deception. The result is "a major, carefully documented and deeply disturbing book, one that deserves the most serious attention of every American concerned about our future" (Haynes Johnson, Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author).

"Farmer's accomplishment is to throw 9/11 into fresh relief. A precise and reliable accounting of what happened has been absent until now. This is it." -Jacob Heilbrunn, "The New York Times Book Review" "All Americans should read John Farmer's "The Ground Truth"." -Douglas Brinkley, author of "The Great Deluge" "Inescapably convincing." -Salem-news.com "An important reexamination... almost thrillerlike in its narrative... As you read it, you may not know whether to laugh or cry." -"Minneapolis"" Star-Tribune" "Startling... compelling... disturbing. Essential." -"Library Journal" "A major, carefully documented, and deeply disturbing book, one that deserves the most serious attention of every American concerned about our future." -Haynes Johnson, Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author "Farmer deftly hones in on the nation's bureaucratic morass leading up to September 11 and the government's failure to respond on the day of the attacks, distinguishing his book from other accounts." -"The American Prospect" "No one is more qualified to write the definitive book about the tragedy of 9/11 than John Farmer. Fortunately, he has done so. Even more fortunately the language is clear, alive, and instructive for anyone who wants to make certain this never happens again." -Bob Kerrey, former U.S. Senator and member of the 9/11 Commission --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition. John Farmer was Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission and is Dean of Rutgers University School of Law. He has also served as Attorney General of New Jersey, federal prosecutor, and security advisor to the special envoy for Middle East regional security. His editorials have appeared in The New York Times and USA Today.

Review Text

I think it's fascinating that some of the reviewers here who are obviously adherents of the "9-11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB!!!" are arguing that this book supports that paranoid view. This is because the author explicitly states that 9-11 was not an inside job. Rather it is his contention that various parts of the US government were less than truthful about their less than stellar performance before and on September 11, 2001Anyway, while the book reads well, I've run into a couple of factual errors that make me wonder about how much care and attention the author put into his work. For example, he states that Mir Aimal Kassi sprayed the CIA Headquarters with gunfire in 1993. That's not correct: Kassi shot at people who were stopped at a traffic light where they would turn off to enter the CIA Headquarters. The second error I ran into deals directly with fundamental facts of September 11. He describes the four members of the "Hamburg Cell" as Saudis. That is not correct at all. Mohammed Atta was an Egyptian. Ziyad al-Jarrah was from Lebanon. Marwan al-Shehhi was from the United Arab Emirates. And Ramzi Bin al Shibh was from Yemen. I was pretty shocked when I read that in the author's book since the facts about the four terrorists' nationalities are widely, widely known.I'm also troubled by the author's contention that:1. The Bush Administration put out false information about Pat Tillman's death (the military did...the White House was not involved).2. The Bush Administration deliberately peddled a false story about PFC Jessica Lynch's "heroics" in the opening weeks of the Iraq War (as a veteran of the Army, I can't count the number of times false stories got floated just through rumor).3. The Bush Administration deliberately manipulated the intelligence that got us into the Iraq War (sorry, as a member of the Intelligence Community, I'm sad to say it was the Intelligence Community that came up with the spectacularly wrong assessments that the Bush Administration used to justify military action...we did it on our own).I'm also surprised that the author cites two books, Steve Coll's "Ghost Wars" and Lawrence Wright's "The Looming Tower" as authoritative accounts of the run-up to 9-11. They are both fine books, but given the fact that neither author had the benefit of seeing the vast amount of classified intelligence related to 9-11, they can't possibly approach the status of "definitive."Finally, a word to all the "Truthers" out there who I'm sure will be pounding on their keyboards to rate this review as "unhelpful" as soon as they read it. You might be surprised that I agree with you: 9-11 was the result of a conspiracy. The thing is: the conspiracy was by al-Qa'ida. It was led by Osama Bin Laden, planned by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and executed by the 19 hijackers. It amazes me that there are large numbers of people who simply refuse to apply Occam's Razor, and instead spin wild-eyed conspiracy theories that deny the possibility that people in government make mistakes and that coincidences and anomalies don't amount to fundamental proof. It would be comical if it wasn't so sad. I suppose it all comes down to:1. paranoia2. a desire for more order in the universe than there actually is3. a misguided sense of elitism ("I'm right and anyone who disagrees with me is 'sheeple.'"

I am writing this review based on the 7 pages that I read of this book. Yes, there are people out there who will tell me to read the whole thing and that this review is pointless unless I do otherwise. I simply though, cannot put aside another distorted or straight up lie that this book is trying to feed to me.Knowing that John Farmer is the senior counsel to the 9/11 Commission, I did begin this book being a little "on guard". I tried though, to be open-minded about what he was saying. While I am set in my beliefs about 9/11, I do feel that it is important to be open to other people's perspectives. I tried; I simply couldn't accept what was put forth to me in this book. Some things that irked me:- John Farmer flat out tells his readers that The Commission didn't lie to us directly; they simply presented the general public with lies that the government and military officials told the commission. Page 2: "In the course of our investigation into the national response to the attacks, the 9/11 Commission staff discovered that the official version of what had occurred that morning-that is, what government and military officials had told Congress, the Commission, the media, and the public about who knew what when-was almost entirely, and inexplicably, untrue."-He also goes on to say that the lie/s told to us by the government about 9/11 didn't escalate a war. Page 4: "Of all the misleading accounts told by a government to its people, our government's account to its people about what happened on 9/11 is certainly not the most egregious. It didn't escalate a war..." I guess in plain terms we could say yes, it didn't escalate a war per say, but is it not important to mention that it started a war?-It is mentioned on page 5 that, "Leadership was irrelevant on 9/11..." The paragraph goes on to try explaining this to be true through various examples, but to say that leadership was irrelevant? Why, how was leadership irrelevant on this day? Doesn't it matter that various leaders ordered certain things like the standing down of fighter jets as an example?-One of the most irritating things to me was written on page 7: "These similarities are the more significant because, unlike 9/11, Katrina was not a surprise, but an event that had been forecast and planned for years ahead of time." For anyone to say that 9/11 was a surprise, just emphasizes the incredible abundance of ignorance that a person obtains. How many times have we read and heard that several different countries warned us months in advance that there was going to be some kind of attack on the U.S?!I should have known to not purchase a book that was written by someone that was hired by the government to "gloss over" the events of 9/11. John Farmer was essentially covering the behinds of the many people in the government behind 9/11...why should I have thought that he would have presented a book to the public that would answer any of the real questions that people have?I'm really disgusted with even the small amount I read of this book. I tried to present quotes from the book that would emphasize the beliefs that John Farmer has and to show the reader that if they are looking for truth, they are urged to look elsewhere. I recommend David Ray Griffin. Please don't waste your time or money on this book.

Most of the reviews of John Farmer's book miss its importance.Farmer has no way of knowing what happened on 9/11 or who did it.What he does know and has figured out is that the 9/11 Commissionwas lied to by people who were supposed to be helping the Commissiondeliver the truth to the public.Whether the lies were big or little, whether the lies were told to coverupa false flag operation or to cover the butts of agencies that had failedin their responsibilities, whether Farmer's explanations for the lies arecorrect or incorrect, the fact remains that the Commission was misled. The conclusion to be drawn is that the Commission's report is unreliableand, therefore, that we do not have the truth about 9/11.That this conclusion comes from the legal counsel to the Commission iscompelling evidence that a new investigation is required.Paul Craig Roberts
