Taking the Guesswork Out of Adopting a Plant-Based Lifestyle
With an undergraduate and graduate degree in finance and 13 years of experience in the corporate finance world, I chose to switch careers in order to share what I've learned about how food choices can affect our health and likelihood of disease. I completed the only collegiate program in the country focused on the medical benefits of a plant-based lifestyle from Cornell University. The curriculum is grounded in the most comprehensive studies of nutrition conducted to-date. I am also certified by John McDougall, MD to teach his program, The Starch Solution. I am a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I was asked to be the Technical Editor of Plant-Based Diet for Dummies for John Wiley & Sons Publishing. The purpose of my technical review was to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information presented in the book. I also partnered with Cynthia West, MD to create Lifestyle WoRx. Lifestyle WoRx is an evidenced-based lifestyle improvement program. It is designed to help participants to improve their health and how they feel by adopting a multi-faceted approach to wellness. The cornerstone of the program is the pursuit of dietary excellence, but also incorporates increasing activity levels into an already busy schedule, and more effectively managing stress. Lifestyle WoRx is now credentialed with a variety of insurance carriers. This lifestyle choice has made a significant difference in my health. I was able to lose over 50 pounds and maintain the weight loss. I resolved an autoimmune condition known as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura or ITP. My body was attacking and destroying my platelets. I could have faced the removal of my spleen or platelet transfusions. My total cholesterol plummeted from 197 to 132 without medication. According to Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr, MD, I am now heart attack proof. I just don't have enough saturated fat and cholesterol in my body to cause a cardiac event. My left knee was osteoarthritic. I had it reconstructed after a gymnastics accident and have had a total of five surgeries as doctors attempted to delay a total knee replacement until I was old enough to have one. As of the time of this writing, I am over three years overdue for my next surgery. My arthritic pain melted away when I gave up dairy and as of now, I have no intention of having my knee replaced. A low-fat, plant-based lifestyle made a dramatic difference in my life.
