Novelist, poet and scholar, Robert Graves went from his school days right to the trenches in WW I. Seriously wounded during the Battle of the Somme, he began writing during his convalescence, to explore his feelings about war. That was the beginning of a long distinguished career.

I love this little collection of odds and ends from Graves. First ran into it 50 years ago in college, when I found the essay "Mrs. Fisher, or The Future of Humor," ranging from Bergson to alleged Chinese jokes. Includes a charming essay on the wags who invited everyone they knew with some version of "bottom' in their names (Longbottom, Sidebotham, and so on) to an elaborate dinner party. The guests only gradually sussed it out, beginning with the main meat course of Rump Roast. And a play that could not be produced in the 30s because it included gays and other stuff people didn't want to hear about. Innocent merriment with nuggets of good lines to read aloud by the fire. An obscure treasure. Just thought to look for it again.
