Modern problems have such a huge scope, the attempt to get to the core of what ails anyone seeking therapy presents dangers for both sides of the human interaction which is supposed to navigate chit seas of social order that still consider possibilities like "overtly religious Messianism or denominational buffoonery" (p. 18) shuffling cards with "a moral philosophy that engages more than they ever dreamed of." (p. 20).Like a preface to Hegel's Phenomenology of brain skewers, this book starts with a summary of ideas. I have a hardcover with copyright 1964. I enjoyed General Psychopathology by Karl Jaspers from a hundred years ago, but Jaspers realized any attempt to update a mental treatment book would require a shift to drone flight patterns of the new hellfire. Before this book reaches the commentary on each chapter that follows a theory of insight therapy for behavior manipulation, integration of the multiplicity of schismatic extremes are the dynamics of social hysteria for Norman O. Brown, whose Life Against Death (1959) is entioned on page 222 with the insight:Brown stipulates that the key conceptin Freudian theory is that of repression, and that the fundamental proposition ofthe entire theory is that all events are meaningful.

I was a graduate student in the early 1960's when this book was required reading. Its title succinctly states its contents like no other book before or since. The subject matter is the comparison of theories from the spectrum of behaviorist theories and therapies through cognitive to analytic ones as well as the moral implications of each. It is an excellent source for the average non-psychologist to understand psychological assessment and treatment at a specific point in time.
