    Book details

Tommy Allsup is probably best known from something he lost...a bet...A Flip of The Coin. As the guitar player of the legendary Buddy Holly s band The Crickets, Allsup was guaranteed a seat on a small plane leased by Holly. Music icon Richie Valens had never flown on a private plane and pestered Allsup to let him have the seat. Finally Allsup agreed to flip a coin to decide. He lost that fateful coin toss and took the band bus. Now known as The Day the Music Died , Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and JP The Big Bopper Richardson all died hours later when their plane crashed in the early hours of February 3, 1959. Tommy Allsup refused to be defined by this historic event. He became a major record producer, a session man on 6500 recording sessions, a Grammy Music Award winner, the organizer of The Original Texas Playboys and many other outstanding activities and accomplishments in western swing, rock and roll and popular music. He is an Oklahoman of Cherokee Indian descent who has lived in Texas, Los Angeles and Nashville. This is the long awaited story as told by Tommy Allsup to his friend and author Guy Logsdon.

Dr. Guy Logsdon is an internationally recognized authority on western and cowboy music, poetry and musicians as well as the life, times and music of Woody Guthrie, the Dust Bowl and its migrants. He is a native Oklahoman from Ada who has been fortunate to work with the tools his parents instilled in him. His father, an Ada business man from Texas, was an old time music man who taught him to love old-time western music, and his mother, a well educated lady of American Indian descent, endowed him with a love and passion for books and knowledge. He is a scholar, a writer, an entertainer, a teacher, a librarian and a collector of traditional lore and books. He has been a member of The National Cowboy Hall of Fame, now The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and for many years he has been a judge in the Music Division of the National Wrangler Awards.

What a slog this book is. Trying to capitalize on an unknown career with a horrific defining moment.

I am interested in rock an d roll music and the history connected to it. I think Mr Allsup was a little bit ego in some parts.
