    Book details

The Great White Shark is an animal that inspires awe and fear: it is one of the world’s foremost predators, equipped with the most formidable jaws in the animal kingdom. With attacks seemingly on the increase in the Western Cape region, as well as the increased popularity of Great White Shark tourism and cage diving, this giant of the deep is often in the news, but frequently for the wrong reasons. South Africa's Great White Shark is the definitive text for cage divers, marine biologists, tour guides, and photographers, providing in-depth coverage of Great White behavior, ecology, conservation, ecotourism and the truth behind cage diving, chumming and shark 'attacks'.

Thomas P. Peschak is a marine biologist at the University of Cape Town’s Marine Biology Research Institute. He leads ongoing research into abalone poaching, kelp forest ecology, Cape Clawless Otters and the ethno-marine biology knowledge of traditional cultures. He is an experienced field biologist and research diver and has worked in Africa, Central America, the Middle East and in the South Pacific. Thomas is an award winning natural history photographer and writer specializing in underwater and marine wildlife subject across Africa. He is a regular contributor to BBC Wildlife magazine and to Africa Geographic.

Fabulous photographs and a well written, informative text make this book a treat for anyone interested in the majestic and terrifying great white shark. The authors are professionals who know how to write for and engage the interest of laymen. They eschew sensationalism; indeed, they probably understate how dangerous the great white is. It is therefore not surprising they take a conservative approach to controversial questions such as how big can great whites get. They say about 20 feet and 1.9 tons. This is a very large fish and there seems no reason to imagine much larger ones. The authors are conversant with and discuss ongoing research and theories regarding great white behavior. An interesting fact: great white eyes are dark blue, not black. This is a short book that packs a wallop.
