    Book details

As a registered nurse working with psychiatric children and adolescents, Dyan Eybergen thought she was trained to handle just about every behavioral situation-until she had her own children. Nothing had prepared her for the intensity of the relationships she would share with her sons-the profound love she would have, the anger she would sometimes feel toward them and, of course, the guilt. For those who have struggled with parenting strategies that have failed or worked for one child but not another, Out of the Mouths of Babes offers a unique parenting approach tailored to working with the personalities of individual children. While guiding parents to uncover successful solutions to such frustrating child-rearing dilemmas as sleeping through the night, toilet training, and sibling rivalry, Eybergen also helps parents teach their children to feel empowered to acquire new skills, problem solve, manage conflict, and develop a healthy self-esteem. Out of the Mouths of Babes is an innovative guidebook that offers a new choice for parents who believe there are other alternatives to the one-size-fits-all paradigm of raising children.

Dyan Eybergen is a pediatric psychiatric nurse who has more than ten years of experience working as a therapist and parent educator. Dyan and her family were guests on the cable television show "For Kids' Sake" along with parenting expert Barbara Coloroso. She resides in Ontario, Canada, with her husband and three sons.

My own children are grown, but curiosity to read the work of a fellow Mom's Choice Award honoree prompted me to read this book. When my daughter was a teenager, she was convinced that I, like all parents, must have read some official parenting manual. Of course, as parents we wish there was such a thing. Out of the Mouths of Babes helps us recognize there is indeed an official guide to parenting: that's the children themselves. Using personal accounts, the author illustrates ways to utilize the child's unique personality to parent appropriately. Mistakes as well as successes are shared with specific examples of children's behavior, often paired with situations faced by adults. In this fashion, readers learn to understand their child's perspective, while directing them along the journey toward maturity- with love and respect. Now that my daughter has children of her own, this book can be her guide to raise each according to their own needs.
