I love Grace Livingston Hill books. They are of simpler times, they are family oriented and many valuable lessons are in the pages. This is a story of love, of selfish pride, of failure, and of new chances. It shows a family coming together in dire times and loving and caring for each other. During this time many hard lessons are learned and the family grows closer as the mother hangs between life and death. Maris learns through this time the Man she thought she loved was not looking for out for her, he was selfish and self focused and without compassion. But God brings Maris a true love, a man of ethics and morals who is kind and compassionate. He shows himself faithful in a brave way and saves her from harm. But most of all his love for God carries them both through very trying and sometimes frightening events.I loved the book, the story, the lessons, the family and the love. Highly recommend.

I don't know why I love GLH so much, but I do. Maybe it is the simpler times, Maybe it is her ability to make me feel for the heroine or the hero, but she truly inspires me to want to endure more and have a stronger faith. She always has faith messages woven into the story. In this story, the characters are not very true to life, the insensitive, rude boyfriend is over the top and Maris is unrealistically slow to get it and see his unselfishness, yet I enjoyed the story...I would read it again just for the fun, to experience the wholesomeness, to inspire to be better and more faithful and enjoy the well crafted happy ending.

Grace Livingston Hill is a superb storyteller who has written dozens of page-turners. While the plot keep me going, this book is not one of my favorites by this author. The characters are carved from stereotypes that make them inaccessible. The protagonist goes through the usual coming of age experiences. The antagonist is a one-dimensional bad guy without a shred of redeeming value. The love interest is a knight in shining armor, a saintly figure, completely unbelievable. This is a book in which weak characterization does not match the stronger storyline.

The author shows in this story that a young lady such as Maris should not be swept away with glamorous promises from a suitor. She discovers as the plot unfolds that a man's character and spiritual depth are much more worthwhile. Will Maris wake up in time to realize this. The author skillfully shows, in my opinion, that through suffering and danger she will. Grace Livingston Hill knows how to keep your interest and inspire you to higher living.

I love Grace Livingston Hill because she can tell such an exciting story and still have it be sweet and full of truly admirable heroes.
