Robert Staunton is ill with cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis. He sells his London Company and decides to live in Alaska (a boyhood dream) in a log cabin, for his remaining years. He sends ahead, Jackson, a member of his staff, to lease a cabin, and then to stay and help him for the duration. The chores are relentless and differences surface between the two men. At Juneau’s Diamond Willow Bar, an objectionable lay-about, Oscar Novak, taunts them. Robert Staunton falls in love with a divorced woman, but Oscar thinks of her as his girlfriend and continues to be belligerent towards Robert. Jackson is a Sensei of jiu-jitsu and takes Oscar down. Jackson is brutally killed Robert is adamant he wants to avenge Jackson’s death, but in doing so he has to fight for his own survival. Forensic and Veterinary Pathologists change the direction of the detectives’ initial thinking and the investigation takes them from Juneau to Fairbanks and back again.

My husband and I had toured Alaska during a summer and met friends who persuaded us to live in Alaska during a winter. We drove off and 76,000 miles later arrived in the Panama Canal region where we pondered that suggestion and thought it would be a good idea. We had always lived in the tropics, so we thought, ‘What about living in sub-zero temperatures. That will make a change.’ The novel is slightly autobiographical, and is set in Juneau because I needed small town atmosphere.
