Review Text

  • By George E. Grimm on August 28, 2017

Ice Wars, The Complete Story of New York’s Greatest Modern Sports Rivalry is a comprehensive review of the first 43 years of the intense rivalry between the Rangers and Islanders. The book features a chapter for every season from 1972 when the Islanders joined the NHL along with the Atlanta Flames up to the 2015-16 seasonEacn chapter begins with the league standings for that season, a review of the each team’s performance that year as well as head-to-head records and statistics. Then there are recaps, sometimes humorous, of each regular season and playoff game between the two rivals that season. Milestone games are highlighted and each chapter includes a profile of a Ranger and Islander player, some famous, some infamous. Included in the text are comments from the over 50 former players, coaches, broadcasters and front office personnel that Mr. Martin interviewed for the book. Also included are many little known facts about both clubs especially the Islanders. For example, when the Isles hosted the Blueshirts for their first ever home pre-season game in October of 1972, the brand new Nassau Coliseum was not fully completed. Seats were still being installed in a makeshift press box and they didn’t have a scoreboard, so they had to borrow one from Skateland, the Rangers practice site in New Hyde Park. Little tidbits like that make the book an entertaining as well as informative read.At 495 pages, the book is a tome and not meant to be read cover-to-cover. It’s more like an encyclopedia that I guarantee you will refer to many times during the season.

The game-by-game account of each season's rivalry, beginning in 1972-73 and ranging to the 2015-16 season, has a humorous edge and is so dynamic that the reader feels like he's sitting in on a live game. I found the insider insight enthralling, and I especially liked that each game is titled, again with a humor that makes this book both fun and entertaining. The almanac-like detail of Ice Wars, makes it a must not just for Rangers and Islanders fans, but all fans of hockey.

Got my hands on an early copy; What can I say? If you are a Ranger, Islander, hockey or just all-around sports fan, this is a must read. You can tell Martin's DNA is drenched in hockey and especially the Rangers and Islanders. It's like a history lesson for hockey/sports fans. Reading the words of the players and those who witnessed these games brings one back to where they were when watching on TV or in attendance one of those great games. Martin has got a new fan in this reader.
