Review Text

For all the vilification heaped on him, Dunning actually appears to be a rather fair-minded and scrupulous if somewhat dated historian, and I'd recommend him to anyone seeking a more plausible vision of Reconstruction than the one currently on offer. On the other hand, this Kindle freebie is AWFUL. The text is jumbled together apparently at random with the footnotes, and following its actual original line can get to be like archeology. 'Aha -- HERE'S where the text resumes.'See if you can find a copy at your local library that hasn't been purged. Sometimes these things get overlooked.

Trying to get a feel for the mindset of the masses during this period in order to describe them in my next book.
