Lights out in Providenciales!

CAICOS CONSPIRACY takes place during a tumultuous time in the Turks and Caicos' history. Unprecedented growth and prosperity in the 1990's and early 2000's bred serious political corruption and avarice. The results proved devastating, and the fledgling country teetered on the the edge of bankruptcy. Finally their protector, the U.K., stepped in and put the Caribbean's most user friendly tourist destination back on track. At this writing the patient has recovered. "A down-island fishing tournament with an old college teammate quickly turns into danger and collusion. Seth and the "Geezers" are forced to take on a shadowy underworld in this tropical paradise. Just as good begins to prevail over evil, an unexpected factor plunges Seth and his crew back into the throes of uncertainty. It will take the sum of the Stone family to try and solve this puzzle."   -- Capt. Tater Johnson

CAICOS CONSPIRACY, by William Valentine, is an exciting narrative of two stories intertwined with most of the story taking place in and around the Turks and Caicos Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. The first major plot involves Jock Baffert who owns six acres of prime land at Turtle Cove. An unscrupulous agent, representing a buyer wants to make sure the sale goes through, (even though it wasn't for sale) hatches a blackmail scheme and kidnaps Jock's wife, Kat. What he didn't count on was that Jock's friends, from Tampa, have arranged to travel down in their 46 foot Hatteras, TARBABBY for a fishing tournament. But, upon hearing about the kidnapping, all six "geezers" investigate the situation and successfully rescue Kat; but not without action, bloodshed and gunshots. The second plot involves a person Seth Stone knew in high school, one Peter Petcock, an evil man who erroneously thinks Seth has harmed him over the years. Peter, I might add, not only lives up to his name but in seeking revenge on Seth, develops and elaborate plot and escapes from a life sentence at a Federal Correctional Facility. He stalks Seth, follows him to Caicos , and comes up with a plan to kill him in a remote cave. Once again, after the abduction of Seth, the "geezers" get involved along with Jeb and Seth's estranged brother, Beau, who lives in Costa Rica. It doesn't take Beau long to develop leads on Peter and they find Seth in the cave, beaten and nipped on by varmints. Peter is buried under a rock slide and is forgotten, but something happens later toward the end of the book, that surprises the reader. The book is fast paced, has numerous twists and turns, while keeping the reader glued to the pages. Also, the author has obviously spent many days in research and on site as the reader feels as though he is living, sleeping and among the Tarbaby crew. The book is also a history lesson of sorts, as the AFTERWORD brings the whole book together in four paragraphs. I'd give it seven stars, if I could, as it is very well written..

It's an atmospheric day with Seth's old friend, Jock, relaxing on his veranda overlooking windswept sea in Turtle Cove, Providenciales, as he becomes nervous over the delayed return of his gorgeous wife, Kat. Seth and his geezer buddies have already departed St.Petersburg with the goal of entering the Caicos Classic Billfish Tournament, in the furtherance of their creed, "It ain't easy having fun." In this third Stone Brothers novel, author Valentine wastes no time ensconcing the reader in his world of exotic ports of call, big fish and the guys who know how to catch them, as well anything else they target - - in the water or otherwise. Before long, we are on the deck of Seth's 46 foot Hatteras, "Tar Baby," deep in the action of teasing a large marlin into taking the bait and the battle that ensues. Tar Baby was already meandering its way toward Jock's neck of the woods when Seth gets an SOS call from Jock on his sat-phone. It is 2007, and the politics in the Turks and Caicos render the local government useless if not complicit to Jock's plight. Seth, being that kind of guy, comes charging to the rescue, but Seth's past catches up with him when he isn't looking, and before too long, it is he who is in need of rescue. In this latest novel, Valentine starts to delve into Seth's background and character, as this protagonist's physical and mental limits become sorely tested by an old adversary who is seeking revenge in a twisted effort to rectify his own self-inflicted problems. It is racier and more gritty than his past novels and reveals the work of an author maturing exponentially as he establishes his own voice in this genre. Of course, all of this takes place against the backdrop of some of the most beautiful waters and scenery one could hope to chill in. And when the old boys are not solving mysteries and fighting battles, that is exactly what they are doing; eating the catch of the day, or dining in fine restaurants, and living the high life as they bop around the island in their rented wheels, on one mission or another when they are not too busy fishing. If you are not in the mood to catch a big fish and ready to book passage on the Tar Baby after reading this book, better check your pulse. Move over, John D., we have Seth to take the wheel, now that Travis has gone on to the Great Busted Flush in the sky!

Sometimes you get a wonderful meal paired with a great wine and you're torn ... should you devour it or should you take your time and enjoy it. I found myself in that situation with Caicos Experience. Simultaneously I wanted to snorkel through it and not put it down until finished while also wanting to take it slow and enjoy it. Somehow I did both. As in his previous books, Mr. Valentine quickly develops the characters and backdrop supporting the plot and then builds on the suspense. It's easy to identify with the good guys, the adventurers, in the story and plug yourself into the fun, trying to help out-smart the bad guys as if you were there. If you've got some buddies you'd do anything for, if you enjoy the warm salt spray of the high-seas, a little adult entertainment, some geezer humor, and a timely, well-deserved ice cold beer, I'm positive you'll enjoy this new book by Mr. Valentine.

The Geezers are back! Seth and the boys are at it again with the addition of Jebb and the re-emergence of Beau. Kidnaping; extortion; armed assault/rescue; revenge; sex; fishing; corrupt government…and Keith Richards. What more could you ask for? This author packs a lot of action and intrigue into what basically is a trip to the Turks and Caicos for a fishing tournament. A tightly written and plausibly presented page turner and an excellent follow up to Costa Rican Reprise. A great series of books Mr. Valentine. Keep them coming.
